American Teen EP Gives His Secrets to Producing

Are you sick of big-budget mega-blockbusters yet? (Not counting The Dark Knight, of course, because who could get sick of that?) Dial it down this weekend by heading out to see American Teen, Nanette Burstein's documentary about five high-school seniors out in Indiana. When the film screened at Sundance earlier this year, Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman wrote: "The teenagers in American Teen are such full, eager, vulnerable human beings that watching the movie makes you gasp, quietly, at what they're up against: not just the usual popularity contest, but the odds for and against making it in the world. Oh My God, It's Almost Time for Batman!

Oh My God, It's Almost Time for Batman!

If you're a real fan of popular culture, there's only one thing on your mind this week (and it ain't Brangelina's twins). It's Batman. Batman! BATMAN! THE DARK KNIGHT COMES OUT THIS WEEKEND!

Excuse me, got a little carried away. But it seems I'm not the only one. Thursday's midnight screenings of The Dark Knight have already sold out for our local IMAX theaters in White Plains and New Rochelle — and West Nyack and New York City, and, I assume, everywhere there is an IMAX screen. *I love how 30 Rock turns up a million times, even though the show isn't a ratings blockbuster. I hope this will get people to tune in because, if I'm being honest, Tina Fey is probably my hero.

*It's interesting to see that Heroes is on the list despite apparently having no notable performers.

*I find Bryan Cranston's appearance for Breaking Bad notable because I've never heard of...

At the Drive-In

At the Drive-In

Whenever we go on vacation, my significant other looks to see if there are any drive-ins near our destination. We've gone once or twice, and it makes me nostalgic for something I didn't really experience the first time around.

In many ways, having drive-in theaters makes sense in our area. Families here drive cars the size of McMansions, so seating would be roomy and comfortable. And since drive-ins are more casual and you're in the privacy of your own car, it's more acceptable if you text someone on your cellphone, talk loudly to your neighbor, quiet the crying baby, or do any of those truly irritating behaviors that you do in the multiplex anyway.

It's...

Associate Editor Marisa LaScala joined Westchester magazine in 2003, and ever since she's blown every paycheck at the Greenburgh Multiplex. She also staunchly defends Richard Kelly, doesn't mind spoiling the endings of trashy movies you're curious about but don't want to pay to see, wishes the Hold Steady would come back and rock out Westchester, misses Arrested Development more than anyone can imagine, and still watches cartoons and Saturday Night Live.
