Speech, Speech!

The Wedding Guru Judy Lewis fields this week’s wedding questions. Today: Speech, Speech!

Nanette asks: “My maid of honor asked me if I’ll be doing a speech at the wedding. I’ve never heard of a “bride’s speech!” What is it and do I have to do it? I’m an awful public speaker!”

Dear Nanette: Don’t let the word “speech” throw you. There are no formalized rules regarding content, nor how long it must be. The only “rule,” if you will, is not to repeat what others have said. This may take some of your anxiety away: Instead of thinking of it as a speech, simply think of it as a way of saying “thank you” to your guests for coming to your wedding and to everyone who helped make the day happen (including family and friends). Even if you decide to keep it short and sweet, it may help to alleviate your nervousness if you write down the few lines you’re going to say. Not to worry, nobody will blame you.

Some brides actually look forward to making a speech and have expanded the concept to include a personal message, expressing her special feelings toward her new husband on their special day. The speech can also be a wonderful way for the bride to honor her mother and/or father by expressing her wishes to follow the example they set.
