Our Hudson Valley Instagram community weighs in on the best drives in New York.
It’s no secret that the Hudson Valley is picture perfect. A quick Google search of the region results in hundreds of breathtaking views that span the length of the Hudson. With so much to see, the best thing to do is to pick up the camera, pack a few snacks, and hop into the car for a scenic road trip.
When we polled our Instagram community for suggestions about the best drives in the Valley, we received so many responses that the only thing to do was to share them all. Without further ado, here are some of the top road trips in and around the region.
Orrs Mills Road from Salisbury Mills to Cornwall
If you head up to Storm King Art Center for the day, do yourself a favor and drive the length of Orrs Mills Road. With picturesque homes and billowing trees along the road, it’s easy to daydream about moving here.
Buffalo to Hyde Park on I-90
Commit five or six hours to this weekend trip from western to eastern New York. As with any good drive, pit stops are necessary. Take breaks in Sharon Springs and Rhinebeck to grab a bite to eat and browse through the shops.
Ellenville to Newburgh on Route 52
This easy road trip will only take an hour or so, and will lead you on a winding drive through some of the most verdant landscapes in New York State, where you can venture through cities like Cragsmoor and Walden.
Route 82 into Stanfordville
The quiet cruise up Route 82 will lead you through grassy farmlands and take you over the serene Wappinger Creek. If you feel the need to stop along the way to take a photo or two, give into the urge. The views are more than a little dreamy.
Beechwoods Road in Callicoon
Anyone in and around Delaware County should take advantage of this scenic farmland drive. The curving road in Callicoon covers rolling hills, a crackling brook, and a fair bit of foliage. Spring and fall are ideal times for a trip.
Kripplebush Road in Accord
Located between Lyonsville and Krumville, just outside of Accord, this road is off the beaten path. The views include farm-style houses, overhanging trees, and lots and lots of grass, so put on a good playlist and enjoy the ride.
Route 44/55 from Route 209 to New Paltz
Adventure lovers and want-to-be racecar drivers will jump on this road trip. Although the journey to New Paltz is only 20 minutes, the actual drive is filled with twisting turns that cross over creeks and pass through Mohonk Preserve. Warning: this is not for the carsick or the faint of heart.
Route 9 to Staatsburg
The wonderful thing about speeding along Route 9 is that it means following the length of the scenic Hudson River and seeing some of the top attractions in Dutchess County. The drive itself is photo friendly, especially in the autumn months. Extend the 40-minute drive with a pause at the Culinary Institute of America for lunch and stops at the Vanderbilt Mansion and Staatsburgh State Historic Site to stretch your legs.
