5 Small Delights You Can Indulge in Right Now
There’s still time to treat yourself before the week is up

Maybe you didn’t get everything you wanted this holiday weekend, or maybe you ended up with a few extra bucks to spend. Either way, now is the time to indulge — you know, before year’s end and we all choose to “resolve.” So here are five small (but delicious) ways to treat-yo-self this week before the official conclusion of celebration season.
Consider cake; you are treating yourself, after all. For this we refer you to Ella’s Bellas, found on Beacon’s Main Street, which bakes up some mighty fine cupcakes, in addition to mini bundt cake creations, specialty cakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and assorted other desserts. Whatever it is you end up with, it’s guaranteed to be just the right amount of moist, crumbly, and (guess what?) gluten free.

We don’t know about you, but the first thing that comes to mind when we think about giving ourselves a little something-something is chocolate (duh). If you feel the same, Fruition Chocolate — based in Shokan, with another retail shop in Woodstock — could be the treat for you. Made in small batches, the folks behind Fruition are slow roasting and stone grinding a special selection of cocoa beans to create artisanal chocolate products, like the award-winning Hudson Valley Bourbon Dark Milk bar, that we can’t get enough of.

It’s not apple season per se, but luckily, cider producers across our part of the state are still pressing enough sweet stuff to keep us satisfied all winter. One of our favorites? Sundog Cider, handcrafted up in Chatham and available at locations throughout the Hudson Valley. It’s made from a blend of apples that’s fermented with Champagne yeast (and pressed using 100 percent solar power!) to create a sugar-heightened cider with just enough sour notes to keep you sipping. Plus, a 750mL bottle will be cheaper than most wine or a selection of something harder, so why not pick some up on the way home?

In the spirit of, well, holiday spirits, stop into Dish Bistro in Mahopac to sit and sip on a choice cocktail (or two). Though known for their excellent farm-to-table fare, energetic dish designs and delightful wine pours, this spot also mixes a mean cocktail menu with selections that are sure to please even the most discerning of imbibers. You could easily ask them for any classic cocktail, or try one of their seasonal selections, but we’d advise ordering something crafted by the brains of the house — like the Ol’Crown, made with local whiskey, Dutchess County maple syrup, orange, and angostura bitters, or our favorite, the Yuzu French 75 with Uncle Val’s gin, hand squeezed yuzu and lemon, prosecco, angostura bitters, and green tea syrup.
