Let’s get one thing straight: CBD is not marijuana. While CBD, or cannabidiol, is related to tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC or the high-inducing compound in cannabis, it’s not the same thing. Unlike THC, CBD does not lead to the “stoned” symptoms for which leafy drug is known. According to Project CBD, a non-profit educational news service, the alternative compound actually has significant therapeutic properties that can lessen or neutralize the psychoactive effects of THC.
While CBD is an increasingly popular aid for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and inflammation, it’s also hot stuff in everything from makeup and skincare to snacks and supplements. In the Hudson Valley, local makers have jumped on the wellness trend, infusing CBD into chocolate, lotions, waters, and more. Here are a few hot options on the market right now:
Hudson Valley CBD
With a focus on all things CBD, Hudson Valley CBD’s specialty is most definitely its range of tinctures, which are designed to improve stress management and focus and provide relief from anxiety. Because the tinctures are orally ingested, flavor is key here. That’s why the brand offers a range of tastes, including natural, lemon, tangerine, and mint, to help the medicine go down, so to speak. Hudson Valley CBD also retails pain salves, lotion, and even lip balm to cater a variety of wellness needs.
We love and appreciate all of our retailers at The Hudson Standard. One such wonderful retailer is @fortorange, a beautifully curated shop up in Albany, NY. They carry a number of our products including Watermelon Chill Shrub and Mellow Currant Shrub. Grab a bottle and other lovely items from this awesome store. The Hudson Standard
Skip the same ol’ syrup in your cocktail and take a sip of The Hudson Standard’s Watermelon Chill Shrub instead. Infused with CBD, the herbal addition features the flavors of ripe local watermelon, along with mint and rose. Whether you enjoy it in soda or swirled into your evening cocktail, you’ll love sipping the soothing shrub, which sources its CBD from Hudson Hemp in the Hudson Valley. If you like what you taste, check out the brand’s Mellow Currant Shrub and Hops & Hemp Bitters, both of which include CBD as an ingredient.
Keeping in line with Cocorau’s commitment to clean, nutritious eating, the Hudson Valley brand brings only the best flavors to its CBD Bites, which utilize organic CBD from Hudson. Also in the raw bites are raw almond, cacao paste, cacao butter, honey, coconut oil, Himalayan salt, and vanilla. Clean to the tee, the bites are a healthy way to “indulge” without loading up on extra sugar. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that their high antioxidant content is great for lowering blood pressure and promoting cardiovascular health.
Mr. Birdsall’s Wonder Elixirs
If you’re looking for simple CBD, check out Mr. Birdsall’s, the Hudson Valley brand that prioritizes non-GMO products, organic farming practices, and U.S. production. In addition to its online store, Mr. Birdsall’s has an ever-growing presence in the Valley and can be found at shops like The Farmer’s Touch in New Paltz.
Sweet Central Express
As if ice cream isn’t enticing enough, Sweet Central Express makes the treat even sweeter with an infusion of CBD. Keep an eye out of the truck’s specialty flavors, like hemp black cherry chocolate chip, which includes just a touch of the relaxing, anti-inflammatory ingredient. P.S. Sweet Central is owned and operated by a CIA graduate, so you know the creamery treats are going to be oh so sweet.
Photo provided by Recess
Produced in the Hudson Valley (shout-out to More Good’s manufacturing facility in East Fishkill), Recess is perhaps the prettiest CBD product to hit the Hudson Valley market thus far. We know it’s kind of an odd way to describe flavored water, but the cans are too chic not to notice. Inside the containers, you’ll find a mix of calming hemp extract, focusing ginseng, soothing L-theanine, and immunity-boosting schisandra. As for the sippable flavors, you can’t go wrong with blackberry chai, peach ginger, or pomegranate hibiscus.
Reverie: Coffee & Craft Beer
Reverie may not produce its CBD-infused coffee (that honor goes to Sträva Craft Coffee in Denver, CO), but it does make a mighty fine cold brew out of it. Designed to ease anxiety and relieve pain, the cold brew comes in three different formulas, each with a varying amount of CBD. Go for +Focus if you want a quick pick-me-up, +Restore if you need an afternoon refresh, or +Elevate if you want to feel seriously rejuvenated during the day.
Rad Soap Co.
Based out of Albany, Rad Soap Co. is the coolest natural suds brand in the Capital Region. In addition to its signature selection of beauty and body bars, the company also specializes in CBD skincare treats. Test out the soothing Sleep Cream, a body lotion that contains 200 mg of full spectrum hemp extract, before bed to sleep soundly and wake up moisturized and glowing.
Woods & Meadow
A woman-led business in Dutchess County, Woods & Meadow prioritizes natural healing with a local mindset. It sources hemp from the sister-owned Homestead Hemp in Salem in order to maintain its commitment to New York production. As for what to try, the picture-perfect bath bombs are a delight when you need to unwind after a stressful week. The frankincense one, for instance, feels extra indulgent with bitty resin rocks on top and an infusion of essential oils and CBD. Drop it in your next nighttime soak and watch your worries melt away. P.S. Our favorite Hudson Valley actress Hilarie Burton is a fan!
