Meet Our September 2016 Hero: Melody Gregory

This attorney helps vets get what they deserve

Published:

Fueled from the frustration of seeing her father, a medic in the Navy and a disabled WWII veteran, struggle to get his service-connected disability benefits, Melody Gregory began assisting those in a similar situation.

While volunteering was instilled in her at an early age, witnessing service men and women like her father only furthered Gregory’s desire to give back to those in and around the City of Newburgh, where she and her family have spent most of their lives. “Seeing so many sad situations with the veterans enhanced my belief of giving back to those in need,” admits Gregory.

In her professional life, Gregory, a managing attorney for Finkelstein & Partners, volunteers with the firm’s Veterans Services Group (VSG) to represent disabled veterans. Through the VSG Gregory works to obtain disability compensation benefits for veterans and their families.

“These men and women put their lives on the line for our freedom, the least we can do is try to assist them,” says Gregory.

The attorney appreciates any opportunity that allows her to help others succeed. “I find satisfaction in turning unfortunate situations around...if we don’t start somewhere to accomplish a form of change, life will be a status quo.”

Her selfless deeds don’t go unnoticed. Gregory’s friends and family recognize the important impact she has on her native neighborhood and its community members.

“Melody is one of those people who is truly, deeply, and honestly committed to the Newburgh community,” shares her colleague, Danielle Mackey. “She gets involved because she cares. She gets involved because she knows she can make a difference—and she does.”
