Budget Pick: Hit Holy Dog for Larger-Than-Life Hot Dogs

Super savings at this Middletown location.

At Holy Dog — an establishment devoted to an often-ridiculed fast food item — the hot dog is almost secondary, a canvas on which chefs can paint with any flavors they want. Can you grab a classic dog for $3 with standard toppings like chili or sauerkraut? Sure. But for another fifty cents, you can upgrade to a specialty dog, like a Chilean dog, a Southwestern dog, or a Danish dog with rémoulade.

Believe it or not, these are some of the tamer menu items at this cash-only location. Though almost double the price, the Girlfriend Treatment will get you almost double the meal: Choice of sweet, spicy, or chorizo sausage with peppers, onions, chili, cheese, pico de gallo, cilantro, and chipotle mayo. At Holy Dog, you don’t need to order the French Kielbasa with sautéed apples, onions, and melted Brie to be filled with joie de vivre; but it doesn’t hurt either.
