This event occurs weekly, on Sunday and Saturday.
“Anna Christie” was written by Eugene O’Neill in 1920. Produced on Broadway in 1921, it won the second of four Pulitzers for O’Neill. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature - the only American playwright ever to have won that honor. Hollywood made a silent film of “Anna Christie” in 1923. This version was eclipsed in 1930 when Greta Garbo played Anna in her first film talking role. Ingrid Bergman played Anna in theatre in California in 1941; Celeste Helm at the City Center in NYC in 1952. And more recently, Uma Thurman on Broadway.
Although written and produced almost 100 years ago, “Anna Christie” has been contemporized by me to fit the romantic and not-so-romantic realism of today. The conflicts between the three main characters - Anna; her father, Chris; and Mat Burke - are deadly. They sear the soul. O’Neill is a master of conflict, akin to the ancient Greek tragedians. O’Neill’s characters’ conflicts go deep into the psyche. In “Anna Christie”, the conflicts erupt, interrupt, and rupture the emotions of both cast and audience.
Since 93% of “Anna Christie” takes place on a barge, I have chosen for the play to be performed at the Certified Marina in Connelly, nine feet from the water of the Rondout. This will provide an unusual opportunity for the actors and for the audience as well to participate together in this unique theatrical excitement of realism rounded and surrounded by this emotionally powerful and explosive “Me Too” drama.
It is no stretch to fetch the imagination to include “Anna Christie” as a powerful part of today’s “Me Too” movement. The audience will have a chance to express their feelings in a Q&A session with the cast and director immediately after the performances.
Three 20 minute intermissions will give audiences time to get a drink and bit to eat at the new Ye Olde Portside Inn restaurant and bar just opened at the Certified Marina. Meals served before and after the show.
Credit cards are not accepted for the theatre - only cash and checks.
