For the Annual Paul Grunberg Memorial Bach Concert, regionally-based Concerts in the Village (CITV) has been invited to offer what is regarded as Johann Sebastian Bach’s culminating masterpiece, the monumental Mass in B minor. Performing will be the Chatham Festival Chorus, CITV’s resident Broad Street Orchestra, and distinguished soloists. CITV founder and Artistic Director David Smith will conduct. The Chatham Festival Chorus is being specially created for this occasion with fifty experienced singers selected from throughout the region.
In many respects the Mass in B minor is a grand summation of Bach’s extraordinary career, incorporating works written as early as 1714 and very likely as late as 1749, the year preceding the composer’s death. Indisputably important in the history of music, it was never heard by Bach in its completed form and in fact never performed in its entirety until 1859. That Bach’s dramatic Mass in B minor speaks powerfully to listeners will be proven once again on July 20th in Chatham NY.
“Given the brilliant scope and technical challenge of the Mass in B minor, performances are not frequent,” says David Smith. “Considering the traditional listener appeal of Bach’s magnificent work, this will certainly be a memorable evening. I am thrilled to be responsible for what promises to be a very moving experience.”
