Call for Artists: Leave Your Swords at the Door
October 6 – November 24, 2017

“What if we acted as if the whole world were a wedding with good wine till the end?
What if you left your sword at the door?”
Monica Raymond

All artists in Westchester County, NY and the New York Metropolitan Area working in all mediums, at any stage in their artistic careers, are encouraged to email submissions of work completed from 2014 to 2017 to the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, Westchester 2 Chapter, to be exhibited in the Riverfront Art Gallery, 1 Larkin Plaza, Yonkers, NY 10701 from October 6 to November 24, 2017.

The exhibit, “Leave Your Sword at the Door,” is inspired by Monica Raymond’s sestina “In Cana,” from the collection of poetry in Before There is Nowhere to Stand, edited by Joan Dobbie & Grace Beeler. It will focus on women who identify as Jewish or Muslim and on their desire to get to know and connect to the “other,” corresponding to the goals and values of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom.  Please respond to the idea that even though Isaiah’s prophesy, “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war anymore,” has not yet come true, we are working towards it through our art work. Themes of connection, identity, friendship, peace, and dialogue may be interpreted broadly, and can also be represented in the submitted work.

All original two- and three-dimensional wall-hung work will be accepted for review as long as they meet the requirements, specification and restrictions stated herein; limited free-standing works will also be eligible for review. The final selection of work(s) to be exhibited will be chosen by the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom Gallery Committee with approval from the Riverfront Gallery Committee. Substitutions will not be allowed.
