First Variety Night at Green Kill is coming in 2018. Auditions are scheduled for three consecutive Sundays from 7 to 9 PM on January 21 and 28 and February 4 at Green Kill, 229 Greenkill Avenue, Kingston, NY.
Mass entertainment in America was first realized in Vaudeville shows, which thrived from the 1880s to the 1930s. Vaudeville attracted audiences which had never existed before. It was the entertainment of the working class at a time of great inequality when workers felt isolated and oppressed, a need that now sounds quite familiar again. Vaudeville was an expression of freedom and rebellion and a pervasive and purely American mass entertainment.
Shows on average presented 20 or thirty acts. The ticket price was cheap. Nothing separated the performance from the audience; it was highly personal self-expression. The entertainment conveyed pure human ingenuity and humor—singing dancing, juggling, joking, often including animals, costumes or props.
Vaudeville was performed in converted store fronts like Green Kill.
At that time in revolutionary America, the Vaudevillian acts showed us who we were and who we were becoming. Time to bring back Vaudeville. History has moved full circle. Let’s tell our story.
