Safe Harbors Ann Street Gallery will be hosting a Gallery Talk with artist Ailsa Read, on the Saturday, April 22 at 2 p.m. The gallery talk is being presented in conjunction with Mythology exhibition, which is on view in the gallery through May 6.

Ailsa Read is a contemporary artist whose present work focuses on the dominance of male hierarchies in religious, political and social culture and its connection with the persecution and sacrifice of women in 17th century England.

Read will talk about the inspiration for her current installation Victim or Target, which concentrates on the female victims of the Lancashire Pendle Witch Trial of 1612 and witches as mythical creatures. She will also discuss her creative process and use of the laser cutting technology and scorching in her work. A process Read employed to illustrate the torture inflicted on these women by a superstitious society whose misconceptions branded them “witches,” leading to their persecution, trial and execution.

Ailsa Read is a graduate of University of Leeds with a BA in Fine Art and MA in Creative Practice. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Huddersfield researching the religious persecution of women in 17th Century England.
