Description

June 20 - July 31, 2019,  Opening Reception:  June 20th, 5:00-8:00 pm

Telling stories of life, through a black and white lens presents a unique challenge.  Without color, there is no veneer to distract from design and form, so the image must be strong and the technique superb.  On June 20th SK Art Gallery NY in White Plains will open the “Impressions of Life” exhibit.  Director Simone Kestelman will exhibit fourteen artists.  This juried exhibit was open to all black and white photographers who had a story to tell. History and countless documentations have been made with black and white photos long before color film was created. Looking back on these, we see their stories. Throughout time various cameras from the Pinhole, Hasselblad, Leica, toy cameras, Holgas, and cameras using wet collodion developing have been used in this black and white documentary storytelling.

In this exhibit Dennis Dilmagbani’s photos of windmills, 1970’s gas stations and NYC bars gives a glimpse into life almost four decades ago showing a much simpler bygone era. He has studied with Ansel Adams and Barbara Morgan and his works are in the collections of Chases Manhattan, NYC; Center for Creative Photography, AZ; and Equitable Life, NY.   Lori Ordover uses a large format camera and tin plate as a medium to stop dancers in motion.  To create the movement of the dancer with almost no blur and to accentuate the form is Ordovers goal and challenge.  She has studied under many accomplished photographers, including Anja Hitzenberger.  The combination of contemporary digital and film projects brings a multi-generational perspective to Nora Moore Lloyd’s work within Chicago’s American Indian community & Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Reservation.  Andrew Courtney uses his lens to tell the story of Palestinian refugees and war in Nicaragua.

Black and white images reveal tone and contrast, shape, shadow and highlight, texture, form, depth, and light quality. These are qualities that challenge the black and white photographer. Jurors Brigitte Freed and Barbara Galazzo selected photographers whose work possessed these qualities.   Please join the artists Andrew Courtney, Dorothy Dahlberg, Jonaina DeSousa, Dennis Dilmaghani, Sarah Liss, Nora Moore Lloyd, Elizabeth Murphy, Christopher Neyen, Tom Nolan, Lori Ordover, Marc Pitler, Sandra Simon, Irv Suss, and Robert Urcchio for an opening on June 20th:

Juror - Brigitte Freed was the dark room developer and printer for Photojournalist Leonard Freed's photographs. She has curated and published 6 books on photography including: The Italians, March on Washington, Made in Germany, and the Berlin Wall. She now manages Leonard Freed's one million negatives, curating exhibits with galleries, universities and museums all over the world as well as coordinating with Magnum Photography on a daily basis. She has worked with Stanford Library, the Brooklyn Museum, the Library of Congress and the Museum of Modern Art to name only a few.

Juror - Barbara Galazzo is the Curator and Exhibitions Director at Rockland Center for the Arts in Nyack, NY. For twenty years she owned and directed two galleries, Gallery 66 NY and Brooklyn Artisans Gallery.

Simone Kestelman established SK Art Gallery NY in White Plains in June 2016 to provide a space to create original work inspired from shared social issues worldwide. Her goal is to help aspiring artists by providing space to create and showcase their work. She wants to provide artistic opportunities and knowledge that she lacked growing up.
