Tompkins Corners Cultural Center (TCCC) announces its second Latino music event. On Sunday, October 8th, from 3 to 6 pm, TCCC will present “Honorando Los Laboradores” - a concert with traditional music groups from Ecuador, Nicaragua, Mexico, and more... representing the rich cultures of the Latinos who work in Putnam County.
As they build the stone walls, pave the driveways, do landscape and tree work, this is the music they listen to on radios and in digital players, and that they perform for local social events. It is an integral part of the musical culture of the Hudson Valley, vibrantly present, but seldom heard by many residents. It is the spirited music of hard working people. These musicians usually perform at house parties and local celebrations in their own communities. This will be a rare opportunity for them to share their music and a special privilege for the Putnam community.
The musical groups singing and performing on October 8th include:
Juan Basilio Sanchez, music from Nicaragua, coming to us from Hudson, New York;
Cesar Vele and his group, Sentimiento, performing a range of popular Ecuadorian music who come to us from Peekskill;
Miguel Angel and his son Cosobi performing Mexican music from Oaxaca, coming to us from Stamford, Connecticut.
The local Latino musicians performing in "Honorando Los Laboradores" are excited to share their music at Tompkins Corners.
The planning for this event has been done in consultation with the New York State Council on the Arts’ (NYSCA) Folk Arts program, ethnomusicologist Tom Van Buren (Arts Westchester and community advisor) and our friends Norma Periera and Wilfredo Morel from Brewster and Peekskill respectively. This program is made possible, in part, through the Putnam Arts Council's Arts Link Grant Program, which is supported with public funds through the New York State Council on the Arts with support from Gov. Cuomo and the NYS Legislature.
