The late Leonard Freed was an international Magnum Photojournalist. He is known for his gripping magazine photo-essays of the struggles of ordinary people. His coverage fo the American civil rights movement first made him famous, but he also produced major essays on Poland, Asian immigration in England, North Sea oil development and Spain after Franco. Photography became Freed’s means of exploring societal violence and racial discrimination. He had seven books produced and his works are in the permanent collection of NYC’s Museum of Modern Art, Stedelijk Museum, Smithsonian, Getty Museum, Jewish Museum, High Museum, etc. and various university, corporate and individual collections. Two signed photos are available for this sale.

Francesco Mastalia set out to wrestle with the surviving meaning of the word “organic, one of the most misunderstood and often misused words describing food today.” Using an antiquated 19th-century wet plate collodion process, he photographed the Hudson Valley chefs, farmers and food artisans who held sometimes strong and sometimes evolving notions of what the word meant to them and their work. He has authored 3 books and is in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress and the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center.
