Description

The world premiere of Daniel Hoyt Daniels’ translation May 24-June 9

The Ghent Playhouse presents “Don Juan the Libertine,” an ageless comedy based on Dom Juan or Le Festin de Pierre by Molière (1665), newly translated by Daniel Hoyt Daniels, and directed by Barbara Leavel Smith. The production runs May 24-June 9. Tickets are on sale now at www.GhentPlayhouse.org.

Don Juan, a Spanish legend, has been treated many times, in many countries, over the centuries. Directors and playwrights have often made the archetype of Don Juan their own, using the story as a vehicle to express their own philosophies. “These versions portray Don Juan as everything from a cruel trickster to a ladies’ man to an existentialist hero,” explained director Barbara Leavel Smith. “Molière, however, created a rich, complex character. We want to bring this character to life organically, through collaborations of director, actor, and designers.”

For this production, Cathy Schane-Lydon will create original music, Joanne Maurer will design the costumes, and Cathy Lee-Visscher and Sam Reilly will build the sets. “Local playwright Daniel Hoyt Daniels has translated the play into verse, and succeeded remarkably in being faithful to the original Molière,” Leavel Smith said. “You simply can’t improve on Molière, where the laughs range from broad comedy to the high comedy of character."

As Don Juan travels from place to place, marrying any woman he desires, his faithful valet is always with him, and many comedic moments come from their relationship. The valet frequently cautions his master’s debaucherous and philandering ways, concerned that God will not tolerate his insolence and arrogance.

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Molière, is regarded as one of the greatest French writers, and his plays have been translated into every major language. His influence is such that the French language is often referred to as the "language of Molière,” and the French Oscars are knowns as the Molières.
