Play Reading of: Eleanor and Alice: Conversations Between Two Remarkable Roosevelts

Date/Time

Aug 22, 2019
07:00 PM until 09:00 PM

Description

They were Roosevelts—American royalty, two of the most renowned and admired women in the country.  First cousins, they were the best of frenemies.

Eleanor Roosevelt, the famed First Lady, and Alice Roosevelt Longworth, presidential daughter and consummate Washington insider, differed on politics—and just about everything else.

Their fraught and complicated relationship, crackling with wit and antagonism, is richly examined in a new play, Eleanor and Alice: Conversations Between Two Remarkable Roosevelts, by Ellen Abrams

Abrams conjures the celebrated cousins at eight key points in their lives; from Eleanor’s engagement in 1904 and Alice’s in 1905, through elections, wars and family crises, until Eleanor’s final illness in 1962.  The women feud, laugh, commiserate and try to understand one another.

The play will have its premier Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Milstein Auditorium of the Henry A. Wallace Visitor and Education Center at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, NY,  4079 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, NY, 12538.  It will be directed by veteran New York actor, playwright and director Scott Klavan.

Abrams came to playwriting after a career as a publishing copywriter.  Her full-length play Intentions was chosen as a semifinalist by both the O’Neill Playwrights Conference and the New American Voices Reading Series.  Her short play, Hamlet Investigations, Inc., won first-place in the True Acting Institute’s Best Ten-Minute Plays 2019 competition and has been published by Smith and Kraus.
