The Red Trunk Project, founded in 2017, is a cultural initiative based on the idea that children should learn to Respect Every Difference—the RED in Red Trunk. The organization’s goals are to give students an immersive, hands-on cultural learning experience in a fun and memorable way and to create a brighter, more inclusive world for our children. “The overarching goal is to alleviate bigotry and cultural ignorance, ensuring that the next generation better understands their fellow citizens around the globe—a simple yet powerful idea that’s more important than ever in the world we’re living in,” says Kevin Thomsen, President and Founder and Rockland resident.
Red Trunk utilizes dozens of cultural artifacts such as arts and crafts, clothing, currency and musical instruments, and combines them with ‘mini-doc’ videos, booklets detailing the lives of children in the culture, immersive 360-degree virtual reality footage, along with a comprehensive lesson plan that will create a deep and lasting cultural experience. “The Red Trunk Project allows children to connect with distant parts of the world they might not ever have the opportunity to travel to themselves,” added Thomsen.
Currently there are 10 Red Trunks in circulation for pilot testing. The goal is to build and fill 20 new Red Trunks for the 2019-2020 school year, and 100 more trunks for the year after that. As Red Trunk Project expands, thousands of trunks, in a dozen languages, containing cultures from a dozen different countries, will be circling the globe.
In order to raise funds for the next round of trunks, the organization will host a celebrity fundraising kick-off event, Red Trunk Liftoff, on Thursday, June 13th from 6 - 8pm at The OUTSIDE
IN Gallery at 249 Ferdon Avenue in Piermont. The event will feature wine and finger food, plus an auction run by comedian Richard Kind. And a mystery raffle!
