Letters to the Editor in February 2015

Read our letters to the editor for February 2015, including our Where in the Hudson Valley “Bank of God” contest answer.

Where in the Valley…?

In our January issue, we challenged readers to identify the location of the former Mechanics Savings Bank. The Beacon edifice was built just before the infamous stock market crash of 1929. During the Great Depression, Mechanics merged with Matteawan Savings Bank to form the Beacon Savings Bank. In 1960, the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church purchased the property and have used it as their house of worship ever since. Hats off to Donald Cowles of Pleasant Valley for nabbing our prize. This month, tell us if you know the whereabouts of a breathtaking mural.

“My experience with this building is borne solely out of my love for food: I’ve stared absent-mindedly at this building from across the street many times as I’ve chowed down on pulled pork taco at Tito Santana Taqueria.”

“I keep wishing I had the wherewithall to turn it into a Jazz/swing club.”

“This is in Beacon, my home town! It’s near ‘Bank Square’ and was originally a bank! Thanks for posting this landmark!”

Lovely Ladies

I was impressed by the feature article, “Working It” (January). The leadership that these ten extraordinary individuals exhibited is an example of the powerful place women have moved into in the 21st century. Congratulations to each and every one.

I have had the good fortune to work alongside Ms. Jennifer Maher, as she served as an active member of the Putnam County Transportation Task Force. She demonstrated vision and contributed many hours recommending ways to improve the public transportation system. She is one of Putnam County’s finest leaders and has a proven success record. Thank you for a great article.

Corrections

In our December story “16 Moments that Shaped our History,” we accidentally printed that the British surrendered at Valley Forge in 1781; the famous capitulation actually took place in Yorktown, Virginia, that year. Also, the site of George Washington’s Newburgh headquarters was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961, not a State Historic Site as we indicated.

In our January Winter Survival Guide, we omitted the contact information for the men’s beanie and thermal jacket in our retail section. Find these winter warmers at Harriman Clothing Company.

In the Ultimate Guide to Hudson Valley 2015, we misspelled the name of cover photographer Karen Melanson.
