Purling, NY 12470
A Catskills landmark since 1865, this rambling country inn was originally a mineral-water health spa. More recently, it has been transformed by owners Suzanne and Stan Oldakowski into a popular bed and breakfast. The manor boasts plenty of knotty pine, overstuffed chairs and even antique cuckoo clocks. Open to the public Thursday through Sunday, its Old World-style restaurant offers an array of stick-to-your ribs German dishes such as rouladen, sauerbrauten, and several types of wurst. But many customers affirm that the schnitzel is something special. Take your pick: There’s well-known Wiener Schnitzel (breaded veal cutlet served with a lemon wedge), as well as Holsteiner Schnitzel (topped with egg, anchovies and capers) and Schnitzel with paprika sauce. But that’s not all. Try Gypsy Schnitzel, made with paprika sauce, mushrooms and onions; or Jaeger Schnitzel whipped up with veal and veggies and topped by a brown hunter sauce. Wrap up your meal with traditional Black Forest cake or apple strudel, then head for one of those overstuffed chairs for a snooze. Wunderbar!
