A Japanese restaurant without steak or sushi is like a rock ballad without a bridge or chorus: It’s disorienting, yes, but when executed with skill and panache it’s a novel, rewarding treat. Since opening last year in an elegant space on New Paltz’s Main Street, the steak- and sushi-less Gomen-Kudasai has satisfied adventurous eaters with dishes featuring home-style udon and soba noodles, served cold, stir-fried, or hot in a soup. The tofu- and rice-heavy menu is manna from heaven for vegans and vegetarians.
