If you haven’t heard of the Dylan Emmet Band yet, you will soon. This young, four-piece group got together in January 2010, earning a honorable mention in the SongCircle Music Group’s national songwriting contest that year. They quickly gained fans with a catalog of songs that range from poppy, upbeat melodies (such as “Collide”) to funky R&B-tinged rock — check out “Bullet” and their stirring cover of “Wayfaring Stranger.” The band is furiously at work on its second full-length album, but impatient fans can catch many of the new songs on tour and online. Front man Emmet, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist who attended Ulster Community College, is usually seen at the mic with a guitar slung around his neck; band mates Ben Basile (bass), Damien Jackson (guitar), and Stephen Olenski (drums) keep the backbeat steady and funk it up with danceable grooves. Each song has its own individual sound, and Emmet’s vocal style varies from flowing rap to dynamic, gospel-like crooning, which makes it difficult to peg the band into a particular genre. But one thing’s for sure: The Dylan Emmet Band is the next big thing.
