BE YOURSELF- YOUR BEST SELF
At Canterbury you will encounter a wide range of opportunities within a small and welcoming community.
YOU WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITIES MOST CRUCIAL TO MEETING FUTURE CHALLENGES AND SUCCEEDING IN COLLEGE.
These start with critical thinking, excellence in writing, and a solid foundation in digital literacy. All are skills best taught the way Canterbury teaches them: in small, interactive classes, where you have the chance to make progress through practice, with individual feedback and guidance. Learning at Canterbury combines discussion and discovery in the classroom with hands-on projects and problem-solving beyond class—whether you are inventing in the Maker Space, crafting a research paper in the Writing Lab, building cardboard boats for an engineering competition in the swimming pool, or heading to Montana for a summer project combining ecology and leadership-building.
AT CANTERBURY, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHER AND STUDENT IS THE FOUNDATION OF EVERYTHING WE DO.
It’s a relationship built on trust and mutual respect, and it is a powerful force inspiring learning and personal growth. Such strong relationships are possible here because of our small size. When the average class size is just 12, each teacher can know every student and his or her individual strengths and needs. These relationships are also possible because of the teachers Canterbury attracts: Nearly 60 percent of our faculty have 15 or more years of experience; more than 70 percent hold advanced degrees; all are dedicated mentors, deeply committed to the success of their students.
ASK STUDENTS WHY THEY CHOSE CANTERBURY, AND THEIR ANSWER ALMOST ALWAYS STARTS WITH THE PEOPLE.
From your first visit to campus, you sense how warm and welcoming Canterbury is. As you get to know students and teachers better, you find they are genuine, open, and down-to-earth. In part, the close connections come from our small size. As you walk across campus, you will know just about every student you see. You will know your teachers too—and their kids and dogs! You may end up babysitting for one of them at some point. Most important, you will find you are surrounded by people who care about you: teachers, advisors, coaches, dorm parents, and friends.
Founded in 1915 and guided by our Catholic heritage, Canterbury is a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. The School prides itself on creating a community based on its Five Values—Honesty, Respect, Compassion, Spirituality, and Self Reliance— in which students and faculty forge lasting bonds and every student experiences a broad and challenging program in a small school setting. The School’s educational environment fosters academic rigor, athletic development, artistic enrichment, spiritual growth and strives to ensure a superior experience that prepares students for leading colleges and universities and for life.
With its rigorous and humane approach to students, both in and out of the classroom, Canterbury’s program inculcates vital intellectual and ethical habits of mind. The School sees all students as individuals, encourages them as necessary, challenges them as appropriate, and inspires them to become moral leaders in a complex, secular world.
