Oakwood Friends School is a Quaker day and boarding school for grades 6 through 12. It offers a college preparatory curriculum emphasizing academic excellence and fostering the ideals of community, spirituality, responsibility and stewardship. These ideals are strengthened through experiential learning, community service and social action. Quaker (Friends) values are realized in our daily academic lives through the use of readings, queries, journals, class discussions and direct experience with the practice of our guiding principles.
The models of leadership and community are fundamental to our program. All students take leadership roles at different times, and in different ways. Oakwood Friends builds community by teaching our students the importance of developing relationships with both students and faculty, and respecting others’ opinions.
Oakwood Friends’ curriculum includes a wide variety of unique electives in Science, Math, Humanities and the Arts, such as: Behavioral Economics, Art & Ideas, Ethics, Philosophy Of Science, Political Advocacy, Ceramics, Advance Studio & Portfolio Prep, Robotics and Engineering Applications, Ecological Perspectives in Contemporary Life, Introduction to Autocad, Existentialism ~ Visions of Identity, Math Elective: Chaos Theory and Fractal Geometry, and 35mm Film Dark Room Processing.
Oakwood Friends’ Global Affairs Certificate Program is for students seeking an understanding of globalization trends and cultural practices. This program gives students, with a particular interest in this area, a solid footing in current events through both rigorous academic work and practical experience in global affairs and it culminates in an individually-designed capstone research project. Students graduate with a Global Affairs diploma.
