Families with sensible priorities will approve of Cornwall’s stacked resume. Its school district is ranked among the best in the state (ranked 87 out of 764 on www.schooldigger.com), they are ranked 13th on Value Penguin’s list of the 2015 Safest Places in New York, and the location provides commuters with quick travel by rail or road to New York City. Families can feel at peace in the warm blanket of the Norman Rockwell-esque village while having access to outstanding outdoor recreation, and a thriving dining and cultural scene a stone’s throw away in Newburgh.

For a taste of the small town family atmosphere, stroll the Town of Cornwall’s picturesque Main Street and stop to hang out at Prima Pizza. In an era of all fancy gourmet pizza operations it is refreshing to have a classic family joint where Little League victories are celebrated and homecoming reunions are held. Newspaper clippings of the achievements of residents are collaged under the glass-top tables, and other points of pride adorn the walls. Those who move away for college can cure their homesickness by ordering a frozen Prima’s pizza from anywhere in the world.  The “everybody knows your name” feel in the shop is reflective of the town itself. Linda Certo, a local social worker, mother, and longtime resident says, “I love the walkability and how easy it is to get to know everyone.”

When residents aren’t interacting on the streets of the village, they are crossing paths in the outdoors. On a warm day roads are filled with kayak-topped SUVs headed to the river, and Subarus headed to Storm King Mountain or Black Rock Forest. The town’s appreciation for, and fierce protection of, these resources has been cemented over many generations. In the 1960s, Storm King Mountain came under threat by Con Edison Electric company, who wanted to build a massive hydro-electric plant. Those who fought the 17-year battle against it would, in the process, achieve local victory through halting the plant’s production, and national victory through helping the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1969.
