Over the past several years, there has been a quiet but profound medical revolution taking hold in the lower Hudson Valley. It is here, in the highly competitive and medically astute Northeast, that one of the highest ranked cardiovascular programs in the country has made its mark—among the top 5% in the nation.

Like any revolution, this one started with a core of passionate, knowledgeable people—devoted to a single vision. That core of people is the medical and support staff of the Active International Cardiovascular Institute at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, under the leadership of Edward Lundy, MD, PhD.

A nationally known cardiothoracic surgeon, groundbreaking researcher and sought-after lecturer, Dr. Lundy and his team have helped catapult their cardiovascular surgery program to national status—including highest rankings from the likes of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and HealthGrades®.
In addition to being board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Lundy has been honored with two American Heart Association fellowships for research, which have been published in some of the industry’s most respected medical journals. He brings over two decades of outstanding surgical performance and leadership to the institute.

Originally from Michigan, Dr. Lundy is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, where he also completed his surgical internship and residency.
Dr. Lundy’s responsibilities at Good Samaritan include overseeing clinical procedures and protocols for the cardiothoracic program, performing and supervising cardiothoracic surgeries, and maintaining a top-notch team of surgeons, perfusionists, advanced nurse practitioners, critical care nurses and support staff. To be part of this prestigious team, every staff member—without exception—is highly trained and experienced in cardiovascular care.
Good Samaritan is the lower Hudson Valley’s most comprehensive cardiovascular program—the only one from the New Jersey border to Albany to offer everything from stress testing and diagnostic imaging to clinically advanced surgical techniques. Although many hospitals say they have cardiovascular programs, not all are equipped or able to do such complicated procedures as bypass or valve surgery.
Even among hospitals that do offer high-level cardiac surgery, there’s a critical difference when it comes to the program at Good Samaritan. Many hospitals are teaching hospitals, where residents perform procedures under the supervision of an accomplished surgeon. Here, all patients deal directly and only with experienced surgeons—that is, Dr. Lundy or the institute’s other senior surgeon, Rawn Salenger, MD, FACS.

Thanks to Drs. Lundy, Salenger and the entire cardiac team, thousands of patients suffering from heart disease not only have a local place to turn—they have one of the best the nation has to offer.
