Somerset County’s Annual Journey Through the Past Offers a Revolutionary Good Time

Calling all history buffs, curious explorers, and families alike! Prepare for a “revolutionary” good time and uncover the rich tapestry of Somerset County’s captivating past during Somerset County’s Annual Journey Through the Past. As one of America’s oldest counties, this educational journey showcases not just one or two but up to 30 historical sites scattered throughout Somerset County, New Jersey. From colonial-era homes and churches to industrial engineering landmarks and architectural masterpieces, the event allows the whole family to discover the hidden stories and fascinating tales that have shaped our vibrant community and country. This highly anticipated annual event will take place October 7th-8th, 2023.

The event has something to impress every member of the family. Each participating site offers its own unique experience, such as docent-led house tours and beautiful antiques, artisan demonstrations, period music performances, costumed period reenactors, and various other hands-on activities.  Bring the little ones along and watch their eyes light up as they participate in games and activities that make history come alive! To get a taste of what’s in store at this one-of-a-kind experience, check out the photo gallery from previous years.

Any sites featured during the event will be open to the public throughout the weekend and free of charge. The event is designed to allow visitors to experience the tour at their own pace. Visitors can prioritize the historical sites they are most excited about and access a digital map to plan their route, soaking in Somerset County’s 21 diverse municipalities along the way.

Strangers to the area will be in awe of the county’s historic corridors and towns, all dispersed against the backdrop of billowing agricultural farms and surrounding suburban communities. Visitors interested in a more scenic route can follow the navigable Raritan River and discover why Somerset County first developed along this beautiful body of water.

So, mark your calendars for Journey Through the Past, where fun and learning intertwine to create memories that will stand the test of time. Join us and become a part of Somerset County’s living history!

Remember, history isn’t just about the past—it’s a treasure trove of excitement and discovery for the whole family to experience today! For further information, please call The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission at 908-231-7110 or visit the event website www.SCHistoryWeekend.com.
