When an animal leaves my office, it should never feel pain,” says head of the Hoppenstedt Veterinary Hospital Dr. Todd Banister, who accordingly keeps up with the latest developments in surgical procedures and technologies. “I never want to be in an exam room with a pet and have it suffer because I didn’t read a book or a journal,” Dr. Banister notes emphatically.
The Hoppenstedt Veterinary Hospital is known for its laser surgeries that boast numerous benefits over the traditional scalpel blade: the laser significantly decreases the amount of pain an animal might feel during and after a procedure; lessens the possibility of post-surgery infections; and decreases surgery time by nearly 20 percent. The procedure is ideal for declawing cats and removing tumors and warts.
The laser is only one of the numerous technologies—or “toys” as Dr. Banister calls them—used at the hospital, home to two full-time veterinarians and five full-time nurses who treat primarily cats and dogs but many “exotic” animals—birds, reptiles, and pocket pets—too. “We put the care of our patients ahead of anything else,” says Dr. Banister, “even ahead of the desires of the owner if we feel they are not what’s best for the pet.”
