Established in 1983, the Catskill Mountain Railroad (CMRR) consists of a 38.6-mile track from Kingston to Highmount in Ulster County.
An integral part of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad in the 1900s, the CMRR branch transported tourists through the Catskills and hauled freight — such as the area’s famous bluestone — throughout the Hudson River Valley to New York City.
The line is operated completely by volunteers and offers popular 12-mile scenic tours along the Esopus Creek between Boiceville and Phoenicia. It is hoped that a current long-term restoration project will reopen the entire track for passenger service.
