Chef Elizabeth Steckel named the German gastropub she and Bavarian hubby/partner Dirk Schalle run Gunk Haus because, "We thought it shows we don’t take ourselves too seriously—this isn’t a stuffy, uptight place. And hopefully it’s a name you don’t forget.” The space is a cross between a classic German beer hall and a Hudson Valley barn. The menu is simple and short with both traditional choices (wursts, sauerbraten, schnitzels) and modern embellishments as well as fresh, local produce. Food is paired with a rotating list of craft brews from Smuttynose, Keegan, Flying Dog, and Left Hand or local wines and cider. A private dining room seats 28-40 depending on the configuration.
