Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern

Saugerties (Ulster County)

Who needs to go to Niagara for falls on your wedding night when Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern is much closer and a lot classier? This five-year-old hotel has all of the amenities of a world-class luxury boutique hotel, yet still pays homage to its roots with an exterior inspired by the 19th-century paper mill that stood there for 100 years.

For your wedding night, splurge on the two-level Tower Suite, which features French doors that open to a patio overlooking the Esopus Creek falls; two bathrooms with heated floors, oversized showers, and hand-crafted antique vanities; a king bedroom with a plush bed featuring an over-stuffed duvet, Egyptian-cotton linens, and a fireplace; comfy spa robes; and a high-def flat-screen TV. You can order room service from the hotel’s Tavern, where CIA-trained Executive Chef Giuseppe Napoli is serving up New American cuisine made with local ingredients. Or you may want to go to the Tavern to check out its dining room — which features a 24-foot ceiling and patio overlooking the falls — and tin-ceiling taproom.

What’s to Love

The private, fully furnished patio overlooking the roaring falls (which light up at night) is what sets this hotel apart from any other in the region. That and the food. Our suggestion: Have a Champagne toast to your future on the patio with one of the chef’s decadent desserts, like the Candy Bar, made of caramel cremeux, peanut-butter mousse, flourless chocolate cake, and pretzel crunch.
