Albany Pizza Wars 2013

This means war! Two upstate venues host this year’s Albany Pizza Wars

What’s a great way to get Americans out and about during the winter months? Combine two of our favorite things: pizza and the Super Bowl. That’s exactly what radio station 107.7 WGNA did when it started hosting the Albany Pizza Wars in 2011. “One of the biggest weeks for selling pizza is Super Bowl week,” says Dan Austin, market manager at the station and one of the event coordinators. “So we created Pizza Wars to get families to sample pizza and out of the house at a time when they might be going a little stir crazy.”

Guests who attend the showdown can feast on as many pie varieties as they like (although there is no official contest, the record for most slices consumed stands at about 15), and cast a vote for their favorite. Although the event is fairly new, it has met with huge success: In 2012, more than 2,300 guests attended the sampling, and 30 vendors participated — bringing with them well over 1,000 pies. “Not to use a baseball term,” says Austin, “but it’s a home run.”

This year, the event takes place on January 31 at Proctors in Schenectady and at the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park. Tickets are $8 if you’d like to chow down.
