Events: Polly’s Editor’s Picks in January 2013

Senior Editor Polly Sparling lists her top event picks for January 2013

Hudson Valley artists — 30 in all — have their work showcased at the annual Member and Faculty Exhibition at Mill Street Loft’s Gallery 45. Visitors can browse through both large- and small-scale paintings (including Barbara Masterson’s Turn Around), as well as photographs, drawings, and mixed-media pieces. Through Jan. 19. Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sat.-Sun. by appt. • 45 Pershing Ave., Poughkeepsie. 845-471-7477 or www.millstreetloft.org

greater newburgh symphony orchesta

Other-worldly experience: This month’s family-friendly concert by the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, entitled “Out of This World,” features selections from the soundtracks of four popular science-fiction films: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, and Superman. Rounding out the program are four movements from composer Gustav Holst’s popular suite The Planets. Local bass-baritone Erich Tusch offers down-to-earth commentary. Jan. 12 (snow date Jan. 13). 3 p.m. $25 reserved seats, $20 general admission, $15 seniors, $10 students, under 7 free. • Aquinas Hall, Mount St. Mary College. 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh. 845-913-7175 or www.newburghsymphony.org

fiddler on the roof

On the face of it, you might not expect Fiddler on the Roof — which centers around the trials and tribulations of a Jewish family living in Tsarist Russia in 1905 — to have been such a mammoth Broadway theater hit: It won nine Tony Awards and was the first musical to run for more than 3,000 performances on the Great White Way. But the struggles of an old-fashioned father watching his five daughters grow up with more “modern” ideas is a universal theme (and the Jerry Bock/Sheldon Harnick score, with songs like “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” certainly didn’t hurt, either). Jan. 3-Feb. 3. Call or visit Web site for times and ticket information. • Westchester Broadway Theatre. 1 Broadway Plaza, Elmsford. 914-592-2222 or www.broadwaytheatre.com

Paco Peña Flamenco Music & Dance

Banish that January chill with Paco Peña Flamenco Music & Dance. Peña, a guitarist, and his troupe of singers, dancers, and musicians offer a fiery performance of flamenco. Thrill to the forceful guitar riffs, clicking castanets, and dance moves that make up this very traditional — and sensual — Spanish art form. Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. $40. • The Bardavon Opera House. 35 Market St., Poughkeepsie. 845-473-2072 or www.bardavon.org

john pinette

Actor and stand-up comic John Pinette has been making the rounds on the comedy club circuit for close to 30 years. Known for his food obsession — as well as his spot-on impressions of everyone from Marlon Brando to the Chipmunks — Pinette has had two Comedy Central specials, 2004’s I’m Starvin’ and this year’s Still Hungry. Catch this funnyman’s act at the Ulster Performing Arts Center. Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. $37.75. • 601 Broadway, Kingston. 845-339-6088 or www.upac.org
