New Restaurants and Hudson Valley Food and Dining News for January 2013

News and notes from the Valley’s dining scene for January 2013

Loud Foods’s Orange Sunshine Mango Habanero Sauce

We’re told that the Bonura Hospitality Group — owners of Shadows on the Hudson, the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, Anthony’s Pier 9, and several other local eateries (including Ribworks Outpost, the younger brother of Billy Joe’s Ribworks, which we mentioned last month) — has yet another ribbon-cutting on the horizon. Bonura’s Little Sicily, a moderately priced Italian trattoria, is set to open in Newburgh either this month or next... Have you noticed how Rhinebeck seems to be morphing into the Valley’s most popular restaurant location? Case in point: There are two (relatively) new eateries in the village. The tiny Matchbox Cafe (which opened in 2011) is earning raves for its grass-fed beef burgers and red velvet cake (the latter earned a spot on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list). And, in case our cover story didn’t identify enough pizza joints for you, Pizzeria Posto began offering wood-fired pies — topped with creative options like fennel sausage, Gaeta olives, and cremini mushrooms — in November... Career switch: Peekskill denizen William Wittman is a music producer and guitarist who works with people like Cyndi Lauper. He is also a budding food purveyor, having launched Loud Foods, a company whose signature product is Orange Sunshine Mango Habanero Sauce. This mango-pepper-honey-Dijon mustard mixture won a Scovie Award from an online site which lauds fiery foods; it is available at Adams Fairacre Farms and Fleisher’s in Kingston... Think you can’t get locally sourced fare once the snow flies? Think again: The Arlington Farmers’ Market, which sets up residence on Raymond Avenue across from Vassar College during the summer months, has moved indoors for the winter. Local vendors like Wilklow Orchards and Dashing Star Farm offer fresh produce and specialty items in the college’s Main Building every Thursday, noon to 5 p.m., from Jan. 24 through May.

Open for Business

A pair of recently opened eateries with a Latin flair

MAMBO! Mission Style Burritos opened in July and quickly established itself as a Mexican culinary hot spot. The casual eatery focuses on take-out, but has space to seat 12. Tacos and — you guessed it — burritos make up the bulk of the menu, and nothing costs more than $8. Though there are only a few specific combinations on the menu, the fun assembly-style counter brings you up close and personal with all the ingredients (like many varieties of veggies, poultry, pork, and beef) so you can create a personalized wrap. Vegans need not despair: Just reading the menu description of Harry’s Garden Vegan Tofu Plate — red rice and black beans topped with tofu, mixed greens, pico de gallo, and MAMBO’s special grapefruit guacamole — set our mouths watering. 18 Hope Plaza, Coxsackie. 518-731-2012; www.mamboburritos.com

Tapas -— the Spanish tradition of serving small plates of food — continues to take America by storm. Tapping into this trend is Millerton’s new 52 Main. Open six days a week, this casual tapas and wine bar presents a wide range of seafood, meat, and vegetable options. The chicken lollipops, which come with mango and cilantro barbecue sauce for dunking, are a favorite finger food option. In keeping with the Spanish theme, the cinnamon and sugar churros is one crowd-pleasing dessert, while the classic chocolate chip and coconut cookies (served with milk, of course) adds a bit of nostalgia to the menu. 52 Main St., Millerton. 518-789-0252; www.52main.com
