One of our best places to eat breakfast in 2014: Café Mio, Gardiner

There are no greasy breakfasts or buttered-rolls-to-go at Café Mio. This four-year-old spot has made its reputation on brunchy-looking morning fare, nice enough for a business meeting or for a special occasion. In the sleek and chic surroundings with an open kitchen, breakfast is served every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The emphasis here is on local and homemade, starring free-range eggs produced at a farm located just down the road. “We make our own bacon, sauces, and dressings,” says Chef Michael Bernardo. Huevos rancheros (left) is a crowd-pleaser, served with scratch-made sour cream, jalapeños pickled on the premises, and freshly made tortillas. Like most of the breakfasts, it is accompanied by fresh greens. Another winner is the apple cinnamon French toast with local maple syrup. Classic Monte Cristo is the ultimate in sweet-and-savory decadence: ham and cheese sandwiched between French toast and topped with a mist of powdered sugar. With most entrées priced under $10, you can feel like you’re dining in style without the pricey tab. 845-255-4949; www.miogardiner.com
