Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write to us: edit@hvmag.com

This giant metal ball may look like it came straight from space, but we assure you, it’s in a familiar place. Poughkeepsie’s Horton sphere — which stores compressed air used by Central Hudson Gas and Electric to help heat our homes — can be spied while riding Amtrak and Metro-North trains, or from atop the Walkway Over the Hudson. (Gardiner resident Pat Wendler nabbed our prize.) This month, can you pinpoint the location of the iconic lighthouse we profile here?

The globe can be seen from the east side of the Walkway. I always noticed it when we left the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum with my son.

Family tower

Our May “Where in the Valley” subject, the Perkins Tower at Bear Mountain, inspired one reader to send us this bit of family history:

My great uncle, Carl “Charlie” Moyer, worked for years building parks in New York under the direction of Robert Moses, [first] at Jones Beach, and later as the superintendent of Bear Mountain State Park. In the early 1940s, my mother would vacation at Bear Mountain, staying in the stone house that was the superintendent’s home. Later, mom and dad had their wedding reception at the beautiful Bear Mountain Inn. My parents took us there every year on Columbus Day. Dad would walk us all up the hiking trail to the summit.

Fairs and forgetfuls

Just cracked open my June issue expecting to see a little more coverage about Greene County for a change. This time your Fairs and Festivals section managed to leave out the Irish Music and Dance Festival in Durham, the Greene County Fair in Cairo, and the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in Oak Hill. These are all major events, and it is not the first year for any of them — so how could they not be on your radar?

Editors’ note: Duly noted. Please visit our online calendar where you can view — and post — upcoming events not mentioned in print.

On page 58 of the June issue, you list the Orange County Fairgrounds as being located in Wallkill. It’s actually in Middletown, just off Route 211. Wallkill is to the north a bit.

Top Docs and dogs

I just received the latest issue (June) and was excited when I thought it read “Top Dogs,” as I hoped you were highlighting the greatest places to get a good hot dog all around the Hudson Valley. Unfortunately, it’s another medical list that takes up way too much space for my taste.

I may be the lone dissenter on this side of your magazine, but I wanted it to be known that I look for entertainment, shopping, dining, history and “staycation” ideas more than anything. Medical and legal advice I can get from family and friend referrals, thank you.

Editors’ note: We make every effort to pack each issue with the topics our readers want to read about — from shopping and entertainment to getaways and, yes, even Top Docs profiles. As for “Top Dogs,” will hamburgers do? Stay tuned in August, when “Burger Bonanza” will be our cover story. Think we’ve missed something? Write to us here, and we’ll add it to our radar.

CORRECTIONS:
In our June article “Flower Power,” we misspelled the last name of Margaret Bridge, Orange County orchid expert and owner of Black Meadow Flora. In addition, the correct genus of orchid mentioned in the article is Phalaenopsis.
