Watching the donuts being made through the kitchen window at Glazed Over in Beacon is a mesmerizing experience. Owned by longtime Beacon residents Ron and Lisa Tompkins, the recently opened, family-run spot is the realization of an idea that came up during a vacation nearly 20 years ago. “We saw a little donut shop while we were at the shore and thought, ‘this is so great, this would be fun,’” says Lisa. “For years it was a running joke: ‘Someday we’ll open a donut shop.’ ”
Someday finally came this past January, and now the kitchen puts out orders of warm, fresh donuts almost as fast as they can make them. On a weekend, they make more than 2,000 in a day.
“Chocolaty, salty, sweet, you can have whatever you want,” says Lisa. Guests customize their own donuts by choosing from a menu of homemade glazes like maple, chocolate, lemon, or peanut butter, then a topping like graham crackers, bacon, Fruity Pebbles, or coconut, all followed by a drizzle such as caramel, vanilla, strawberry, or raspberry. The individually tailored treats are then made to order while you wait.
Not sure what to pick from the endless combination options? Opt for the donut of the day (DOTD), which features ingredients not found on the regular menu. Recent DOTDs have been “Loco for my Cocoa,” with a caramel glaze, Cocoa Puffs topping, and drizzled with vanilla and salted chocolate caramel, and “Spring Fling Thing,” featuring a lemon glaze, topped with Fruity Pebbles and Nilla wafers, and drizzled with a vanilla glaze. If that’s still too many choices, you can always go “naked.”
One of a Kind Donuts are individually designed and prepared by the accommodating staff at Glazed Over.
Rest assured, if the donuts alone aren’t enough to put a smile on your face, the friendly staff surely will. The family dynamic spills over to the shop’s staff, which is made up of friends and former Beacon High School students. It’s not uncommon to catch them singing in the kitchen or joking with kids through the kitchen window; it’s the type of place where you can tell that people enjoy going to work every day. And they’re always brainstorming new ways for their customers to enjoy their holey delights. Keep an eye out for donut ice-cream sandwiches and specialty donuts — like Cannoli Cream and Strawberry Shortcake — coming soon.
