The baked goods and brunch offerings at McKinney & Doyle are consistently voted the Valley’s “best” by readers of this magazine. Now, fans of the Pawling eatery have something new to cheer about: its barroom.
“It has this great speakeasy feel,” says Andrew Sarubbi, the restaurant’s manager and wine sommelier. “This is not a party bar; it’s more about relaxing, enjoying a nice cocktail, and socializing.” Easy enough. Housed in the renovated storefront adjacent to M&D’s main digs, the addition is just as warm and inviting. Décor highlights include a recessed tin ceiling, brick walls, maple hardwood flooring, and a crystal-and-wrought-iron chandelier.
Thirsty (and hungry) patrons pick their poison from an expansive wine and cocktail list — deemed one of the world’s finest by Wine Spectator magazine — or nosh on comfort food from the full menu at the high-top tables or marble bar, which seats about 15 people. “Our most popular cocktail right now is Paris and Sage — it’s my favorite,” says Sarubbi. The drink calls for sage, organic agave nectar, ginger, St-Germain liqueur, and rum infused with Harney & Sons’ Paris tea, which Sarubbi infuses himself.
Stop by in August and early fall, when the restaurant plans to host its first wine and beer comparative tastings in the new space. Can’t wait that long to pair muffins with your mixed drinks? “I think our dessert martinis sell so well because of the bakery,” jokes Sarubbi. He recommends the Chocolate Mousse, featuring chocolate vodka, whipped cream, and melted Belgian chocolate. Cheers!
