Events: Kid’s Korner in June 2012

School’s out for summer, so start vacation with a truck festival, some camps, and a little bit of magic

Cool Camps

June 25-29: Race Car Making Camp Creative kids exercise their construction skills as they build and decorate their own soapbox race cars. When cars are finished, designers turn into drivers, and strap on their helmets and safety pads for an exhilarating ride. 9 a.m. $255 members, $265 nonmembers. • Gold’s Gym LaGrange. 258 Titusville Rd., Poughkeepsie. 845-463-4800 or www.lagrangesummercamps.com

If the Shoe Fits

June 2-3: Cinderella The Prince is giving a ball to find his princess, and the kingdom rejoices. Everyone except Cinderella, that is, because her stepmother won’t allow her to go. But her magical friends give her a beautiful gown and the chance to dance the night away — or at least until midnight. From Stage to Screen Acting Studio students perform the classic fairy tale about a girl whose shoes change her life; the show includes music by Rodgers and Hammerstein. 1 & 4 p.m. Call for ticket information. • Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center. 12 Vassar St., Poughkeepsie. 845-486-4571 or www.fromstagetoscreen.net

Finding Fairies

June 9-10: Secrets in the Garden Magic is all around us if we just take the time to look. Explore Locust Grove’s vast property of manicured gardens, rolling woods, and old carriage trails as you embark on an enchanted hunt to see what the fairies have left behind. A storytelling performance begins the day, and be sure to pay attention: there may be clues as to where you can find the hidden fairy huts. 12 p.m. $8. • 2683 South Rd. (Rte. 9), Poughkeepsie. 845-454-4500 or www.lgny.org

Orange County Truckers

June 3: Touch-a-Truck Get up close and personal with trucks of all shapes and sizes — fire trucks, tow trucks, tractors, and other heavy-duty vehicles are on display and ready for you to climb aboard. Don’t miss the aviation additions like hot air balloons, helicopters, and fighter jets. For the first hour, children with special needs or sensitive hearing can enjoy the metal presentation without the noise of the horns. 10 a.m. • Orange County Airport. 500 Dunn Rd., Montgomery. 845-457-4774 or http://touchatruck.org/index.html
