Events: Polly’s Editor’s Picks in March 2013

Senior Editor Polly Sparling lists her top event picks for March 2013

Color is king at the Carrie Haddad Gallery this month: A quartet of artists welcome spring with works in which color plays a key role. Dale Payson’s still lifes make use of a light color palette, while Jenny Kemp’s abstract “color forms” paintings concentrate on refined and sophisticated combinations of hues. Wall relief ceramic paintings of birds by Anne Francey and paint-by-number collage works by Stephan Jennis round out the show. March 7-Apr. 14. Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. 12-5 p.m. • 622 Warren St., Hudson. 518-828-1915 or www.carriehaddadgallery.com

esopus orchestra

Founded in 2009, the Esopus Chamber Orchestra is a 24-member ensemble that performs both classical music masterpieces and rarely heard works. This month’s concert, entitled “Classically Inspired,” features the former: Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 9, “Jeunehomme,” with esteemed pianist George Lopez as soloist, is the centerpiece. Stravinsky’s Danses Concertantes and Schubert’s Fifth Symphony are also on the program. March 23 at 8 p.m. $25-$30, $15 students. • Quimby Theatre, SUNY Ulster. 491 Cottekill Rd., Stone Ridge. 845-377-3566 or www.esopuschamberorchestra.com

romeo and juliet

The first of his nonhistorical tragedies, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet depicts the fatal consequences that can result when young love blossoms between members of warring families. Westchester Community College hosts a production of the oft-produced play by the National Players, a classical touring company that — at 64 years — is the nation’s oldest. March 17 at 3 p.m. $22, $20 seniors & students, $16 children under 13. • Academic Arts Theatre, Westchester Community College campus. 75 Grasslands Rd., Valhalla. 914-606-6262 or www.sunywcc.edu

Lisa Loeb is a woman of many talents. Her 1994 hit single “Stay (I Miss You)” was nominated for a Grammy and used in the film Reality Bites. She has been the subject of a reality TV series, recorded three albums of kids’ music, and launched her own line of eyeglasses. Loeb returns to her pop/rock/punk roots with the No Fairy Tale tour, in support of her just released CD of the same name. March 23 at 8 p.m. $27. • Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. 30 Second St., Troy. 518-273-0038 or www.troymusichall.org

There are tribute bands, and then there’s Rain. The Beatles look- and sound-alikes, who have been playing together longer than the Fab Four did themselves, finished up a stint on Broadway and are now on a nationwide tour. From “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “Hey Jude,” the quartet performs songs from throughout the Beatles’ catalog — including some that the boys from Liverpool never sang in front of a live audience, but only in the studio. March 18 at 7:30 p.m. $30-$52. • Palace Theatre. 19 Clinton Ave., Albany. 518-465-3335 or www.palacealbany.com
