Sure, the die-hard runners of the Hudson Valley never let snow and below-zero temps stop them from an invigorating run, but true racing season debuts here in May and goes through October.

To get you ready for the season, Pete Colaizzo, head coach of Marist College’s track and cross country, shares these tips:

• Run or do cardio at least five times per week; make one of the sessions longer (like a long run).

• Plan out your racing schedule in advance, so you have a mental roadmap of what you want to accomplish.

• Plan out your training schedule to match your racing schedule. Allow time to adapt to different levels of training.

• Have fun! Pick races that will challenge you, but also ones that you will enjoy.

• Run with people instead of alone, for sociability and accountability.

Race Schedule:

There are dozens of races throughout the Valley. Here are just a few in the mid-Hudson to get your muscles tingling:

April 28: Kiwanis Kingston 5K/10K, Kingston, Ulster County. Race is in the Historic Rondout area of Kingston.

May 4: Rock The Ridge, Mohonk Preserve, Ulster County. An environmental fundraiser, the race invites individuals or relay groups to run, walk, or hike a 50-mile course within 24 hours.

June 1 & 2: The Classic 10K, Middletown, Orange County. A 10K, a 5K, and a Junior Classic that ranges from 50–800 meters.

Pat DeHaven, treasurer of the Mid-Hudson Road Runners, encourages runners to visit running-club websites — such as Eastern Dutchess Road Runners Club, Orange Runners Club, Taconic Road Runners Club, and Shawangunk Runners Club — for more available races. “There are many small races which are true hidden gems,” DeHaven says.
