The 411: Contrary to the belief of a certain animal rights outfit, the name of this sprawling suburb has nothing to do with the plundering of the Valley’s piscine resources. Kil is Dutch for creek, and fish means the same thing in both languages.
The village of Fishkill was settled in 1709. A military encampment built here during the Revolutionary War supplied the entire northern division of the Continental Army (although it is not known if Washington slept here).
