This rustic hamlet at the northwestern extremity of both the Town of Red Hook and Dutchess County, across the Hudson from Saugerties, was long a center of dairying and fruit growing, and remains a haven for roadside vegetable stands and pick-your-own farms. Originally given the uninspiring appellation Upper Red Hook, the name was changed in the 1790s to give the place a more Italianate air. Home to the famed Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, and a mile down the road from the sprawling Clermont State Historic Site, erstwhile estate of seven generations of the colonial Livingston family.
