Straddling the Wallkill River, the village of Walden is the largest of the three villages in the town of Montgomery. The mills that settled along the river in the 19th century and the knife-making plants that followed the mills are long gone, but Walden still retains its working-class feel. Best known as the home of the Thruway Markets hypermarket complex, Walden also has a lively Main Street, where specialty stores and restaurants have managed to thrive. In the past decade, chain stores such as Stewarts, Dunkin’ Donuts and Subway have also moved into town, as have more and more city workers looking for a reasonable commute.
