Every dog has its day — and as our culture becomes more health conscious, it’s the organic hot dog’s time to shine. Jed and Brock Kosiner, of the Kosiner Brothers’ organic hot dog stand, are leading the way in New Paltz. In June, the pair began selling fresh franks with homemade condiments at the entrance to the village’s Water Street Market. It’s currently a seasonal business — they’ll remain open until December, or until the snowfall becomes too heavy, according to Jed — with a hiatus until spring. While traditional Sabrett beef franks are available, try an Applegate Organic beef hot dog ($3.50) with homemade toppings and sauces including zucchini relish, sweet ’n spicy chutney, veggie or meaty chili, caramelized onions, and a variety of cheeses (50 cents per topping, sauces are 25 cents each). The indecisive diner can pick from among 13 creative specialty dogs, such as the Blue Ribbon (Dijon mustard, blue cheese crumbles, herbes de Provençe) or the Fweddy (spicy ketchup, zucchini relish, red onion) at only $5-$6 each. And for those who think “organic” means unaffordable: Lunch for two with drinks ($1-$2 each) can run you less than $15.
