Best place to eat on the cheap in 2012: Safari African Restaurant, Poughkeepsie

We might be going out on a limb here, but we’re guessing a good number of people in the Valley have never tasted real African food. Good thing Safari African Restaurant opened over the summer to fill this culinary void. Stuff yourself with Waakye — rice sprinkled with black-eyed peas; tomato gravy; a Ghanaian sauce called shitor; a side of spaghetti; and a choice of either beef or goat stew — for only $15. Island Goat Soup (goat meat, potatoes, carrots, and cocoa) and Red Red (spicy black-eyed bean stew and fried plantains) go for $12. If you’re adventurous and enjoy having a multitude of options, try Taste of the Island ($17), which lets you choose from among curry goat, four types of chicken, or oxtail to accompany your rice and peas. To complement these exotic meals, the interior exudes a sophisticated vibe thanks to the sleek bar, high tables — which can be moved to make space for live entertainment — and windows frosted with silhouettes of a lion, a rhino, and other African animals.
