Events: Kids' Play Dates in November 2013

Search for turkeys, discover local wildlife, and escape to a magical island

Island Hopping

Nov. 9: Elska Live! Elska, a fun-loving and adventurous girl, has discovered a new volcanic island near Iceland. In this musical show, she introduces the audience to her many new friends — like Winter Bear, Goobler, Arctic Fox, and the Lost Socks — and describes what it’s like to live in her mystical new home. Many of the songs come from her 2012 album, Middle of Nowhere. 11 a.m. $9, $7 children. The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck. 661 Rte. 308, Rhinebeck. 845-876-3080; www.centerforperformingarts.org

Fairy Tales and Fables

Nov. 10: Aesop Bops! Storyteller David Gonzalez brings classic tales to the Nyack Center’s stage. His performance — which features not one prop, only dialogue and energetic music — centers around three well-known fables:The Lion and the Mouse,” “The Fisherman and His Wife,” andThe Turtle’s Shell.” Each teaches a constructive lesson — like the value of friendship and the importance of not being greedy. Be sure to stick around after the show for cookies and milk. 2 p.m. $12 in advance, $15 at the door, children under 2 free. 58 Depew Ave., Nyack. 855-278-7762; www.artsrock.org

Camping Out

Nov. 11: School Break Mini-Camp Did you ever wonder why squirrels collect acorns in the autumn? Do you know why bears hibernate for the winter? Learn the answers to these questions and more at this one-day camp at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum’s Wildlife Education Center. Campers can try their hand at animal-themed crafts, and then bundle up for an outdoor hike to look for signs of critters. Snacks aren’t included, so be sure to pack something for your little tyke. Recommended ages 5-8. 9 a.m. $22. 25 Boulevard, Cornwall-on-Hudson. 845-534-7781; www.hhnaturemuseum.org

Super Nanny

Nov. 17: Mary Poppins Meet one of pop culture’s favorite caregivers at Bethel Woods. This 1964 Walt Disney film returns to the silver screen as part of the arts center’s classic film series. Julie Andrews stars as the “practically perfect in every way” nanny who descends on the estranged Banks family. With the help of the jovial Bert — played by Dick Van Dyke — she takes the children on grand adventures in a whimsical world of make-believe —  and in the process brings the family back together. 2 p.m. $8, $5 children 3-12, under 3 free. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. 200 Hurd Rd., Bethel. 866-781-2922; www.bethelwoodscenter.org
