O+ (O-Positive) Festival 2011 in Kingston, NY, Offers Music, Art, and Film to Support Healthcare for Local Musicians, Artists, and Filmmakers

Bartering art for health care

The second annual O+ Festival (that’s “O-positive,” like the blood type) takes place on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 7-9, in uptown Kingston. The event provides an opportunity for uninsured musicians, artists, and filmmakers to barter for health care, while doctors and wellness practitioners offer their services in exchange for performance and visual art.

Throughout the weekend, festivalgoers can hear live music and view impressive wheat paste installations, thought-provoking films, a photo exhibit, and more. The music, art, and film performances are open to the public — a $25 suggested donation gets you a wristband for the weekend — and take place at several locations including Keegan Ales, the Old Dutch Church, Elephant, Stockade Tavern, and Maxwell’s. On the bill: Nicole Atkins and the Black Sea, Mike and Ruthy’s Folk City, Shana Falana, Cat Martino, and others.

Self Health, an alternative-wellness symposium, also open to the public, offers workshops, lectures, and Q&A sessions with holistic providers on topics such as nutrition, yoga, meditation, and herbalism.
