Olana’s “Icebergs in August” Summer Party Features Stunning Views, Paintings — and a Giant Iceberg

Attendees at this year’s summer soirée at Olana are in for an ice-cold treat

Published:

Icebergs in August sound like an unlikely happening, but at Olana State Historic Site in Hudson, it’s very real. The site’s yearly Summer Party — which follows the “Icebergs in August” theme in honor of painter Frederic Edwin Church’s voyage to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1859 — promises to be an evening full of ice-cold drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and art.

Attendees sip on chilly cocktails crafted by Iceberg Vodka and Hillrock Distillery, nosh on hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants, and enjoy an oyster bar — all while admiring the breathtaking views of the open-sided ice house, reimagined by architect Albert (Beau) Simons IV, during the cocktail reception. A silent auction, in which guests may bid on a full-scale reproduction of Church’s “The Icebergs” painting, follows from 6-8 p.m.

Of course, the coolest attraction — literally — is the giant iceberg sculpture, created by ice artist Sean Taylor of Capital City Carvers. Guests are encouraged to snap a selfie in front of the carving, which is set against the backdrop of Church’s picturesque estate.
