Meet mushrooms foragers like “Wildman” Steve Brill, learn about the Hudson Valley’s mycological associations, and join their next expedition



Wildman Steve Brill is notorious for his foraging walks, which are family friendly and combine education with entertainment. Here’s where you can join him for an expedition this month:

Sept. 3: Sunken Meadow Park, Kings Park, LI
Sept. 4: Sticks and Stones Farm, Newtown, CT
Sept. 5: Central Park, Manhattan, NY
Sept. 10: Appalachian Trail, Cornwall Bridge, CT
Sept. 11: Crestwood riverside, Crestwood, Westchester, NY
Sept. 17: Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY
Sept. 18: Central Park, Manhattan, NY
Sept. 24: White Memorial Center, Litchfield, CT
Sept. 25: Stone Barns, Pocantico Hills, NY

These groups lead regular forays and offer a wealth of other mycological information:

Mid-Hudson Mycological Association (www.midhudsonmyco.org)
This group hosts its annual walk on Saturday, September 24 from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at Poughkeepsie’s Locust Grove, the Samuel Morse Historic Site. This is the only time at which anyone is permitted to pick mushrooms at this beautiful nature preserve. The Suburban Foragers (www.suburbanforagers.com)
A group of Rockland County-based environmentalists and herbalists who lead weekly foraging walks and blog about their experiences.
